Jay "JJ" Jeffries is a fictional character on the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street. He is portrayed by Liam Farmer. Jay is the son of lesbian nurse Maia Jeffries and sperm donor Mark Weston. Jay is named after his mother's deceased wife, Jessica "Jay" Copeland.

Storylines

2007-2011

Maia, desperate for a baby, gets her sister Tanias husband Mark Weston to donate sperm. Once she gets impregnated and the family find out, there is a lot of tension. Tania never forgives Maia but in October 2007, Maia goes into labor and the only one who can help her is Tania. The birth brings the two sister back together. Jay is born and named after Maia's wife Jay Copeland, who was murdered by the Ferndale Strangler. Maia decides to travel to Thames to look after Jay for a few months.

In 2008 Tania, Libby and Yvonne got to Thames to fetch Maia and Jay. Maia insists that she has decided to stay in Thames. But the girls convince her round. Maia's delusional friend becomes saddened that Maia is leaving and so kidnaps Jay. He comes back unharmed however and the Jeffries return to Ferndale. The Jeffries girls become concerned when they notice Maia neglecting Jay. They confront Maia who admits JJ has Kennedy's Disease. Though Maia soon begins to love her son.

In 2009 after muderering Ethan Pierce, Maia travels to Thames for a while leaving JJ in Tania and Libbys care. But once day, Tania has a shower and realizes JJ is missing and the door open. Once police get involved, it is revealed Maia has returned and taken JJ for a walk. Over the next few weeks it is shown that Maia has gone crazy with the guilt of killing Ethan.

In 2010 JJ develops a love for Yvonnes new partner Ben Goodall who wishes he could have kids. Later on in November, Yvonne returns from Peru and gives JJ a trike she purchased. Unfortunately the trike is 30 percent cocaine and JJs life is put in risk when a drug dealer breaks into the house trying to retrieve it.

In February 2011, JJ leaves with Maia and Yvonne to start a new life in Sydney.
